Pet Vaccinations

Importance of Vaccinations
Many diseases and other health conditions can be prevented with the right vaccinations. Furthermore, keeping your pet up-to-date on certain vaccinations is often required by local law. For example, you could be fined or otherwise penalized if your pet’s rabies vaccination expires or if you fail to have your pet vaccinated against rabies in the first place. These requirements are put into place to protect not only your pet, but the rest of the population in Collierville as well.

When Should You Start Canine Vaccinations?
Generally, vaccinations should be started when the puppy reaches six to seven weeks of age, though this can vary depending on the size and weight of the dog. An experienced veterinarian will be able to make the best determination as to when the dog is large enough to begin vaccinations. Typically, the first vaccinations given to puppies include:
- distemper/parvo
- rabies
- bordetella (kennel cough)
Many vaccinations for dogs, such as rabies, must be done every year or every several years (depending on the dog’s age), whereas others only need to be done once. Our vet will be able to provide you with the right vaccination schedule for your dog.
When Should You Start Feline Vaccinations?
Rabies is preventable with a simple vaccine. Kittens should receive their first rabies vaccine at about 4 months of age (16 weeks). Your cat will then need to be vaccinated 12 months later. After that, he or she will only need to get the rabies vaccine once every 3 years.
Kittens should receive the FVRCP vaccine within 2 months of age. They should then be vaccinated every 3-4 weeks until they are 4 months old. This is to ensure that the kittens are protected from these viruses early on since they are more are at risk. Kittens will need to be vaccinated again after 1 year and every 3 years after that.
All cats and kittens should be tested for Feline Leukemia even if other cats in the home have tested negative. Veterinarians often recommend giving kittens this vaccine in a series of 2 shots administered 3 to 4 weeks apart, then vaccinating once annually. Indoor cats often do not need this type of vaccination.

Microchipping
What is microchipping?
Microchipping is the insertion of a small data chip under the skin of an animal, typically in the shoulder region. This tiny chip is encoded with a unique ID number, which is recorded (along with your pet’s name and your contact info) in a national pet registry database. When an animal worker finds a lost or stray pet with no collar tag, a quick check with an RFID scanner triggers the chip to send its ID number to the scanning device. The animal worker can then check this information against the online database to find you and inform you that your pet has been recovered.
Why is microchipping so important?
Collar tags remain the primary way to identify missing animals, and every pet should be equipped with one. Unfortunately, collar tags (and sometimes entire collars) can get separated from the pets they identify. Lameness and Limping
